ZAMBIA Motor Sports Association (ZMSA) president Marco Comana has said over 50 riders are expected to participate in motocross second round national championship to be held on Sunday at the Ndola Motor Sports Club (NMSC).
Comana said at a press briefing this morning at Honda Zambia in Lusaka that he expects more riders to participate in the Ndola event unlike the 49 that made the first round championship held a fortnight ago at the Leopards Hill Motopark in Lusaka.
The Honda Zambia managing director said the Copperbelt, particularly Ndola has become the hub of motorcycle in Zambia because of that there is always an influx of riders competing in all championships staged in the region.
“Following the successful first round at the new Leopards Hill Motopark last month, the sport this Sunday moves to the Ndola Motor Sports Club circuit just outside Ndola along the Ndola-Kitwe Highway.
“Ndola Motor Sports Club is currently the nation’s centre of motocross with all the best riders hailing from Ndola,” he said.
He said the persistent rains would have no negative impact on the racing track because Ndola has more sawmills therefore sawdust, which is used by motocross organisers to absorb moisture and softening tracks, was in abundance.
Comana named Honda-mounted Dustin Fussel of Lusaka who was overall winner of the first round championship and Nicholas Comana who also rides a Honda as some of the top riders expected dominate proceedings in Ndola.
The ZMSA president said for some reasons motocross has been losing top riders every season and this season was no difference.
He cited 2008 champion Paul Ferriman of Lusaka and his successor Graham Lionnet of Ndola as some of the riders who would be missed this season.
He said Lionnet, who comes from a strong motorcycle sport family comprising four competitive riders, left for further studies in Australia after emerging as champion last year while Ferriman switched to sky diving at the end of the 2008 season. ©ZMSA
